Samsung has returned to the Smartwatch business with a vengeance. While the Galaxy Gear watch looked really cool, it didn’t take off with consumers the way many thought it would. This could change with the launch of the Gear S2.

The S2 features a circular design with rotating bezel, which can access apps and notifications. It also has a 1.2″ touchscreen face, is only 1/2″ thick, has a batter that will last 2-3 days and, like the Galaxy Gear watch, has a futuristic look to it. Aesthetically, it is a really nice and cool looking watch. JK Shin, CEO and leader of Samsung’s mobile business, said, “The Samsung Gear S2 reflects Samsung’s most progressive innovation.”

This innovation includes more fitness options, NFC for mobile pay capability, and the ability for users to perform quick functions without being tethered to a smartphone. Most smartwatches depend on Bluetooth connectivity to smartphones in order for them to function. This feature from Samsung could be a game changer.

While Samsung still trails Apple in the wearables department, the Gear S2 does make a strong statement for the design and innovation of its wearables department. If Samsung can partner with third party developers to enable the watch to do much more than it currently can, it will definitely have a positive impact on sales and the future of smartwatches at Samsung.
