A Wearable that can help Your Brain Relax

by Joe Sesso on December 8, 2015

Wearables such as the Fitbit or the Apple Watch have become popular in terms of health and fitness tracking, as well as making it easier (in the case of the Apple Watch) to read and respond to e-mails and text messages. Just when you thought you’ve seen it all in wearable technology, think again. Or should I say Thync again? Thync is a wearable gadget that is designed to help you relax and manage stress. Here’s how it works.

Using Bluetooth, the Thync device delivers “vibes” (or “intelligent waveforms”) to the brain via small (jump drive size) patches that attach to your neck and forehead. Using the partnering smart phone app, you can either have a calming or energizing experience, depending on which effect you desire (you can choose “Calm” or “Energy” on the app). Thync sends signals to the brain that enable it to either relax or energize. Sound freaky? The company has raised more than $13 million in funding from investors who believe in the product. In fact, co-founder Jamie Tyler has said that his company would never have received the funding if the product didn’t work. The company says that thousands of volunteers have tested the product. It is currently available on Thync’s website as well as other e-tailers such as Amazon and sells for $199. It was featured at this year’s CES show in Las Vegas.

Despite the claims, it is still a big experiment. While it could possibly be the “secret sauce” to relieving stress in a way that’s never been done before, until there are actual scientific studies that prove it, some experts recommend a wait and see approach.

Since my blog is focused on real estate, I always try to think (no pun intended) of how a product I review or discuss can be integrated into a Realtor’s life. If you’re active in the real estate business, you know how stressful it can be. Gary Keller, Co-Founder of Keller Williams, discussed in his book The ONE Thing how easy it can be for Realtors to neglect their health when they get deeply involved in their business. No matter how busy your day is, you cannot neglect your health. This means eating healthy, exercising and getting enough sleep. But after a long day, what can one do to unwind? Thync could be a healthy alternative to other options (e.g. drinking), as well as helping by preparing the person for a good night’s sleep. I’m going to give this product a try and will report back.
