Message to Real Madrid President: Let Zidane do his Job

by Joe Sesso on March 20, 2019

Zinedine Zidane is back as Real Madrid’s manager, and Madridistas around the world (including this one) couldn’t be happier. After leading the team to three consecutive Champion’s League titles (equivalent to winning three Super Bowls), Zidane surprised everyone by stepping down as boss last summer. It was after his departure that the wheels started to come off the Real Madrid express, causing one of the fastest free falls in club history.

First, Cristiano Ronaldo said he wanted to leave. Despite having a contract with Madrid through 2022, he was upset that club President (and billionaire majority shareholder) Florentino Perez refused to discuss an extension. Perez is a proud man, but he made the same mistake many billionaire hands-on owners make, and let his ego get in the way. He sold off Ronaldo to Juventus (where he is having another amazing season) but failed to replace him with anyone of substance. Then Perez announced the signing of new manager Julien Lopetegui just two days before the beginning of the World Cup. Lopetegui was promptly fired by the Spanish national team causing a worldwide shit storm, which resulted in an early World Cup exit for the 2010 World Cup champions. Then there was the 5-1 loss to Barcelona, which was unacceptable to Perez. He fired Lopetegui a mere quarter into the new season. After replacing him with Madrid coach Santiago Solari, more controversy followed, as the new coach had problems getting along with some of his star players. After a mediocre 25 games or so and high profile exits from the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, Solari was fired too. Wow! Re-enter Zinedine Zidane as the club’s third coach this season. I can only hope he negotiated a great deal with the club, rather than come back to suffer embarrassment at the hands of a president who isn’t known for his popularity among current and former players.

So here’s my message to the Real Madrid president: Let Zidane do his job! The team is down right now but has many talented players with world class experience. Zidane knows how to manage this squad, but he also needs the funds to replace Ronaldo, one of the greatest scorers of all time. He also has to fill a few other spots, as well as get the team to gel together. The president has to understand that this may take more than one season. Zidane was the manager for only two and a half years and won three Champions League titles (and a bunch of other smaller ones). He knows what he’s doing, Florentino. You and Madristas all over the world are very fortunate that he chose to come back to Madrid, rather than wait until a lucrative opportunity would come up with a team like Paris St. Germain (in Zidane’s home country with players such as Neymar and Kilian Mbappe) or Juventus (with Cristiano Ronaldo). So please, Mr. President, let an amazing coach like Zidane do his job and stay out of his way. He knows what he’s doing.
